DISCOVER THE BIGGEST RECYCLED VILLAGE IN THE WORLD, HERE IN BUKIT LAWANG!
Embark on one of the eco-trails organised by Project Wings, one of the fastest-growing NGOs in Germany which is currently building the world´s biggest recycled village from 250 tons of plastic waste. The different eco-trails will give you the opportunity to explore the different departments and sustainable initiatives of Project Wing. Go on the Trash Bank Tour if you'd like to see the waste sorting process and its valorisation and create your own souvenir made of recycled plastic. Plant lover? Enjoy the botanical garden and make your own botanical tea fresh from the garden. Join the eco farm tour to learn more about the composting process, its organic fertilisers or pesticides and other organic and sustainable farming practices. If you're keen on learning more about how the recycling village was made, opt for the eco-trail exploring the bamboo factory and learn how to make your own eco bricks. Each eco-trail is ending with a fun, creative and enriching workshop. If you have time opt for the full day tour to explore each department and learn how to become a real eco-warrior. You can also opt for a personalized to compose on your own with your selection of 2 half-day eco-trails (lunch included). Please note that all benefits are going to the Project Wings association to support their great initiatives. We are just promoting their eco-trails to support the NGO and their initiatives as they contribute positively to the local communities.

What Is Project Wings?

Project Wings is one of the fastest-growing NGOs in Germany and is currently building the world´s biggest recycling village from 250 tons of plastic waste in Indonesia. Project Wings is taking action against three of the world's biggest problems: species extinction, tropical deforestation and the continuing flood of plastic.
Through i approach, Project Wings is creating a self-sustaining system, run by locals, which combines environmental protection, nature conservation and animal welfare
How ?
Nature is being cleaned up and sustainable awareness is being created.People collect, clean and dry plastic waste and stuff it into plastic bottles with the help of a stick until they are stable. These so-called "Ecobricks" can be exchanged for 5,500 IDR = approx. 0,30€ = 1 hot meal each. These Ecobricks are installed in the walls protected from light and thus isolate the plastic waste from the environment. Plastic abrasion is prevented and the waste is put to good use.
With our deposit system, we have created a holistic concept that makes it possible to construct buildings from affordable materials in a very short time.

After a guided tour of the recycled village, discover the Sumatera Trash Bank, which has transformed waste management in Bukit Lawang. The organisation recycles a wide range of waste, helping to preserve the environment. During this guided tour, you will have the chance to learn more about the sorting process. An enriching experience if you're committed to sustainability and the valorization of local ressources. This tour also includes a fun workshop to create your own souvenir made by recycled plastic (keychains, combs, soap dishes, coat racks...)

Trash Bank
After a guided tour of the recycled village, enjoy a botanical tour to explore the organic garden. You learn more about botanical plants and all their powers. This is your chance to discover more about the traditional Indonesian medicine. This tour ends with a botanical tea making workshop. Pick the ingredients directly in the garden and learn how to make the traditional Indonesian herbal drink called "jamu" known for its great medicinal properties. You will be able to buy some of the garden's dried plants to make your own herbal teas at home.

After a guided tour of the recycled village, explore the organic farm to learn more about the issues of chemical products in farming and taste the farm's organic products. During this guided tour, you will get explanations about the farm's organic system, its composting process, its organic fertilisers and organic pesticides but also about the planting and maintenance process of the fruits and vegetables growing there. This tour ends with a delicious degustation of herbal tea and fruits from the garden. Pick the ingredients directly in the garden and simply enjoy!

Learn all the secrets of organic farming
After a guided tour of the recycled village, discover the bamboo factory used to build the village and learn more about the bamboo processing system. Then head to the Sumatera Trash Bank, which recycles a wide range of waste. You will have the chance to learn more about the sorting process. End the tour with a workshop to learn how to make the famous Ecobricks, made out of plastic waste and used to build walls. They are placed away from light, isolating plastic from the environment. Plastic abrasion is avoided and plastic put in good use.

Explore the world's largest recycled village and all its different departments. Start the day with a visit of the bamboo factory and ecobricks garage to understand better how the village was built. Then head to the organic garden for a botanical tour. You will learn more about botanic plants and traditional medicine and you will even do your own herbal drink. After lunch, you will keep going with a visit of the organic farm and compost house and get explanations about the farm's organic system, its composting process and learn more about the planting and maintenance process of the vegetables growing there. Transport from our lodge to the Project Wings Recycled village is NOT included. You can either go there by foot (maps location under "Project Wings Sumatra / Recycling Village" - about 35 minutes walk from Sumatra Orangutan Explore) or we can arrange it for you by tuk tuk - Round-trip price : 100,000 IDR per tuk tuk (1 to 2 people per tuktuk)
